Jonathan Delafield-Butt is a Professor of Child Neurodevelopment and Autism at the University of Strathclyde, directing the cross-disciplinary Laboratory for Innovation in Autism. His work focuses on the origins of conscious experience, embodied development, and motor disruptions in autism. He holds a PhD in Developmental Neurobiology from the University of Edinburgh and has conducted postdoctoral research at Edinburgh and Copenhagen Universities. Scholarships at Harvard and the University of Edinburgh’s Institute for Advanced Studies highlight his science-philosophy bridge-building efforts. His lab develops wearable and smart device technologies to identify autism through motor signatures, collaborating with engineers, clinicians, and educators.
Education:
- PhD in Developmental Neurobiology, University of Edinburgh (2003)
- MSc in Neuroscience, University of Edinburgh (1998)
- BSc (Hons) Medicinal Chemistry, University of Leeds (1996)
- Pre-clinical Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy, Scottish Institute for Human Relations (2009)
Research Interests: Embodied agency, intentional movement in early development, neurobiological foundations of consciousness, autism motor signatures, and inclusive education. His lab’s innovations include AI-driven iPad games for autism diagnosis and 7T MRI studies on brainstem abnormalities in autism.
Publications & Awards: Over 150 publications, including key works like Sensorimotor Intentionality (2013) and Feelings as Agents of Selection (2014). Honors include the CompleNet Best Poster Award (2024) and the Strathclyde Team Medal for Innovation in Autism (2018).
Teaching & Collaboration: Leads courses on early childhood development and emotional learning. Collaborates internationally on projects like the Normativity in the Origin of Mind (Spanish Government-funded) and the Brainstem in Autism MRI initiative.
