Jonathan Dee is an Associate Professor and Director of the Creative Writing Program at Syracuse University's Department of English. He holds a B.A. in American Studies from Yale University. A prominent novelist and literary critic, his works include Sugar Street (2022), The Locals (2018), and The Privileges (2010), which was a Pulitzer Prize finalist. His critical essays appear in Harper's, The New Yorker, and The New York Times. Dee has received fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts and the Guggenheim Foundation.
His research interests span literary criticism, creative writing, and social commentary. He frequently explores themes of privilege, identity, and cultural dynamics in his fiction and essays. Dee has taught advanced writing workshops and courses on narrative forms, including 'Directions in 21st Century Fiction' and 'The Social Novel.'
Recent professional activities include serving as Director of the Graduate MFA Program in Creative Writing and participating in literary festivals such as the Texas Book Festival and Colgate Writers Conference.
