Jonathan D. Shephard is a Professor at Heriot-Watt University's School of Engineering & Physical Sciences and a member of the Institute of Photonics and Quantum Sciences. His research focuses on applied optics and photonics, particularly high-power laser processes for surgery, novel optical fibers, and laser integration into manufacturing. He leads multidisciplinary collaborations with medical professionals and industry partners.
Education: BA in Engineering (St John's College, Cambridge University, 1994); MSc (Eng) in Engineering Materials (University of Sheffield, 1996); PhD in 'Surface modification of IR transmitting glasses for integrated optics' (University of Sheffield, 2000). Professional experience includes roles at Pilkington Plc and the University of Sheffield before joining Heriot-Watt in 2003.
Research Interests: Development of optical fibers for high-power laser delivery, biomedical laser applications, and advanced manufacturing processes. Key projects include photonic crystal fibers and fiber-optic probes for medical diagnostics.
Grants & Collaborations: Participates in the EPSRC Centre for Innovative Manufacturing in Laser-based Production Processes. Active in UN Sustainable Development Goals related to health and innovation.
Labs/Teams: Leads the Applied Optics and Photonics Research Group. Collaborates with the Institute of Photonics and Quantum Sciences on cutting-edge photonics applications.
