Jonathan Crock is a Professor of Human Rights Law at American University's School of International Service and Founding Director of the Futures of Democracy, Tech & Human Rights Lab. He holds a master’s from Oxford, a PhD from Leiden University, and is a Research Affiliate at the Grotius Center for International Legal Studies. His work focuses on the intersection of democracy, technology, and human rights, particularly addressing systemic inequalities through innovations in governance.
- Positions: Faculty Fellow at Kogod School of Business' Institute for Applied AI; Research Affiliate at Leiden University.
- Research Interests: AI ethics, decolonizing democracy, environmental democracy, reparations, and workplace democracy.
He has advised U.S. presidential campaigns, worked at the U.S. State Department, and lectured globally at institutions like Harvard and Stanford. His forthcoming book, How to Save Democracy in the Age of AI, explores democratic resilience in the digital era.
Awards: 2025 Gunther Eyck Award. Over 200 students have published research under his guidance, cited by UN bodies and human rights commissions.
Labs/Teams: Leads the Futures of Democracy Lab, producing reports on AI governance, reparations, and disinformation. Collaborates internationally with UN agencies and NGOs.
