Jonathan C. Y. Tang is a Senior Research Fellow in Metabolic Bone Disease and Clinical Biochemistry at Norwich Medical School, University of East Anglia (UEA). He is also a member of the Metabolic Health and Musculoskeletal Medicine research groups. He is a HCPC-registered advanced Biomedical Scientist and a Fellow of the Institute of Biomedical Science (FIBMS). He leads the Bioanalytical Facility (BAF), a multidisciplinary lab specializing in HPLC-MS/MS, immunoassays, and wet chemistry, accredited by CPA and certified for GCLP. He supervises MRes, PhD, BSc, and MBBS students and collaborates extensively with the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital NHS Trust.
- Doctor of Philosophy, University of East Anglia (2020)
- Master of Science, Manchester Metropolitan University (2004)
- Bachelor of Science, Liverpool John Moores University (2001)
- Fellow, Institute of Biomedical Sciences (2004)
- HCPC Registration, Biomedical Scientist (2001)
Dr. Tang's research focuses on metabolic bone disease, particularly vitamin D metabolites, bone turnover biomarkers, and calcium/phosphate homeostasis. He specializes in developing and validating LC-MS/MS assays for clinical and research use. His work explores the impact of vitamin D supplementation and exercise on bone health in athletes and the general population, and he investigates PTH therapeutics for bone stress fractures. His research integrates analytical biochemistry with clinical applications, aiming to improve diagnostic accuracy and therapeutic outcomes.
His recent publications span high-impact journals such as Nature Communications, Journal of Bone and Mineral Research, and Clinical Chemistry and Laboratory Medicine. The research trends emphasize methodological rigor in vitamin D measurement, nutritional interventions in vulnerable populations (malnourished children, HIV patients), and the interplay between hormones, exercise, and bone health. His work increasingly involves randomized controlled trials and population-level studies with global health implications.
- Biomedical Science congress - Best short paper presentation (2001)
- Society for Endocrinology highly commended clinical junior poster prize (2017)
- Society for Endocrinology Clinical Endocrinology Journal award (2021)
- Calcified Tissue International top 10 cited papers (2020-2021)
- Journal of Bone and Mineral Research top cited papers (2021)
Dr. Tang co-supervises a range of students, including PhD, MRes, BSc, and MBBS candidates. He has secured grant funding from government bodies such as the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) and the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC), as well as pharmaceutical sources, supporting projects on vitamin D, probiotics, and PTH therapeutics. His work on the Vitality Trial and studies on osteogenesis imperfecta highlight his role in clinical trial design and analysis.
He leads the Bioanalytical Facility (BAF) at UEA, a core research lab that provides advanced analytical services. The facility supports numerous national and international collaborations and serves as a training ground for students and researchers in clinical biochemistry techniques. His team includes research technicians, post-doctoral associates, and clinical scientists from both UEA and the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital NHS Trust.
