Jonas Toubøl is an Associate Professor at the Department of Sociology, University of Copenhagen, and Editor of Acta Sociologica. He specializes in political sociology, social movements, and the role of social media in volunteering and crisis management. His research focuses on solidarity activism, digital mobilization during crises like the Syrian refugee crisis and the Ukraine conflict, and the impact of volunteering on youth during the pandemic.
Education: PhD in Sociology (2017), MSc in Political Sociology (2011), BSc in Sociology (2008), all from the University of Copenhagen. He has held academic roles since 2013, including Postdoc (2018-2021) and Assistant Professor (2021-2022).
Research interests include volunteering dynamics, social media's role in crisis response, and unionization patterns. Current projects study SoMeVolunteer (social media-driven volunteering in crises) and the effects of volunteering on youth inequality during the pandemic.
His 15 most recent articles analyze themes like digital volunteering ethics (e.g., 2025), refugee solidarity online (2024), and pandemic resilience (2023). Awards include the ILERA Transfer Young Researcher Prize (2013) for work on union recruitment.
Grants total over 8 million DKK, including projects funded by Velux, Spar Nord, and the Carlsberg Foundation. He teaches research design and mixed methods, co-authoring the textbook Grundbog i Mixed Methods.
