Jonah Bloch-Johnson is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Earth and Climate Sciences at Tufts University, holding the Chang Family Assistant Professorship. He holds a PhD from the University of Chicago (2018) and a BA from Columbia College (2008). His research focuses on state-dependent climate sensitivity, exploring how climate change severity depends on background conditions. He investigates nonlinear feedbacks in humidity, cloud cover, and ice dynamics, with implications for extreme warming scenarios like runaway effects.
Dr. Bloch-Johnson leads initiatives such as the Green's Function Model Intercomparison Project (GFMIP) and co-created the LongRunMIP data archive of long-term climate simulations. He organizes the ECS Symposium and Rossbypalooza summer school. His teaching includes courses like Climate Modeling and Geological Research at Tufts.
Key research contributions include work on spatial feedbacks, temperature-dependent feedbacks, and ocean heat uptake models. He emphasizes the importance of long-term climate model simulations and interdisciplinary approaches to understanding complex climate dynamics.
