Jon Waterfield is Associate Professor in Pharmacy Practice at De Montfort University, affiliated with the Leicester School of Pharmacy within the Faculty of Health and Life Sciences. He serves as MPharm Programme Leader and teaches across all levels of the MPharm programme, specializing in clinical governance, consultation skills, and public health. A Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy, he is registered with the General Pharmaceutical Council and is a member of the Royal Pharmaceutical Society.

His research focuses on pharmacy education, particularly the definition and assessment of competence, integration of theory and practice, student-partnered learning, and the professional identity of community pharmacists. His work employs qualitative methodologies and sociological frameworks such as Bourdieu’s theory to analyze educational and professional constructs.
His recent publications reflect a strong trend in educational innovation and assessment in pharmacy, with recurring themes around competence, reflective practice, student engagement, and curriculum integration. Articles examine prescribing practices in obesity and hypertension, hypnotics, and the use of novel teaching formats like 'speed-dating' for clinical topics.

Jon Waterfield supervises final-year pharmacy projects and supports postgraduate students in clinical pharmacy and MSc programs.
