Jon Waterfield

Jon Waterfield is Associate Professor in Pharmacy Practice at De Montfort University, affiliated with the Leicester School of Pharmacy within the Faculty of Health and Life Sciences. He serves as MPharm Programme Leader and teaches across all levels of the MPharm programme, specializing in clinical governance, consultation skills, and public health. A Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy, he is registered with the General Pharmaceutical Council and is a member of the Royal Pharmaceutical Society.

His research focuses on pharmacy education, particularly the definition and assessment of competence, integration of theory and practice, student-partnered learning, and the professional identity of community pharmacists. He explores how pharmacists contribute to public health and medicines management in care homes. His work employs qualitative methodologies and sociological frameworks such as Bourdieu’s theory to analyze educational and professional constructs.

His recent publications reflect a strong trend in educational innovation and assessment in pharmacy, with recurring themes around competence, reflective practice, student engagement, and curriculum integration. Articles examine prescribing practices in obesity and hypertension, hypnotics, and the use of novel teaching formats like 'speed-dating' for clinical topics.

Jon Waterfield supervises final-year pharmacy projects and supports postgraduate students in clinical pharmacy and MSc programs. He has led the development of new modules and assessment strategies, including reflective writing and student-led formative assessments. His work is supported by engagement with national pharmacy education conferences and collaborations with peers in educational research. He has contributed to training resources such as Fundamental Aspects of Medicines and authored the Community Pharmacy Handbook.

He is actively involved in the Pharmacy Practice research group and the Institute for Education Futures at DMU, contributing to interdisciplinary educational innovation and the future of healthcare professional training.
