Jon Pearce is a Professor in the Computer Science Department at San Jose State University (SJSU). He holds a B.A. (1972) and Ph.D. (1980) in mathematics from the University of California, Berkeley, with a specialty in mathematical logic. He has held visiting roles at Ohio State University, Bosphorus University, and multiple institutions in Zimbabwe and Sri Lanka through Fulbright programs. From 1997–1998, he contributed to Computer-Telephony applications in Java and lectured on design patterns. He served as Department Chair at SJSU from 2010 to 2014.
His research interests include agent-based systems, object-oriented methodologies, functional programming, cognitive science, and complexity science. He has developed extensive course materials on design patterns, Java, C++, and software engineering. He co-founded the Summer University Program, leading annual educational expeditions to Switzerland since 2006. His professional contributions span academia and industry, including work with startups like Silma and Capri Systems.
Award highlights include multiple Fulbright appointments and roles as an external examiner at the University of Zimbabwe. His teaching spans courses in computer organization, programming languages, and advanced software engineering topics.
