Jon N. Seal is a Professor of Biology at the University of Texas at Tyler, specializing in organismal biology, evolutionary ecology, and the ecological impacts of social insect symbioses. His work focuses on fungus-gardening ants and their microbial symbionts. He holds a PhD in Organismal Biology from Florida State University (2006), with postdoctoral training at the University of Texas at Austin (2009–2012) and the University of Regensburg, Germany (2007–2009).
His research spans three primary areas: molecular ecology of symbioses, mechanisms of symbiotic homeostasis, and ecological consequences of these interactions. Key contributions include studies on coevolutionary patterns between ants and fungi, symbiont specificity, and the role of microbial communities in maintaining symbiotic stability. His work has been funded by the National Science Foundation.
Dr. Seal’s research integrates genomic, ecological, and experimental approaches, with notable findings on fungal diversity in North America, sex-biased dispersal in ants, and the impact of symbiotic relationships on soil biogeochemistry. Collaborations include projects with institutions in Florida and Yale University.
He teaches courses such as Ecology, Evolution, and Entomology, and has published extensively in journals like Molecular Ecology, Journal of Experimental Biology, and PLoS One.
