Jon M. Hussey

Dr. Jon M. Hussey is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Maternal and Child Health at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill's Gillings School of Global Public Health. He is also a Faculty Fellow at the Carolina Population Center. His research focuses on the intersection of social stratification and health disparities, particularly racial/ethnic and socioeconomic differences in morbidity and mortality. He investigates how childhood exposures influence adult health inequalities through the lens of the Developmental Origins of Health and Disease (DOHaD) framework.

Education: Dr. Hussey holds a PhD in Sociology from the University of Washington (1995), an MPH in Health Services (1996), and a BA in Sociology & Psychology from UC Santa Cruz (1985). He completed a postdoc in Demography at the University of Pennsylvania (1998).

Research Interests: His work emphasizes health equity, social determinants, and the long-term impacts of early-life conditions. He uses large-scale longitudinal data such as the Add Health cohort to analyze trajectories of health disparities.

Awards: In 2011, he received the Edward G. McGavran Award for Excellence in Teaching from the Gillings School.

Teaching: He teaches courses like SPHG 600 (Introduction to Public Health) and SPHG 722 (Developing, Implementing, and Evaluating Public Health Solutions).

Service: He contributes to the Gillings Inclusive Excellence Council and has advised on curriculum development for justice-based public health education.
