معرفی
Jon Henrik Ziegler Remme is an Associate Professor in the Department of Social Anthropology at the University of Bergen, Norway. His research explores relational ontologies and multispecies entanglements in diverse ethnographic settings, particularly in Ifugao, Philippines, and the Gulf of Maine, USA. He leads the SEATIMES project, funded by the Research Council of Norway, which investigates how climate change transforms human-marine temporalities.
Remme’s research interests lie at the intersection of social anthropology, environmental change, and multispecies relations. He focuses on how human-nonhuman worlds emerge through relational ontic practices—practices with ontological effects. His past work examined sacrificial rituals and Pentecostalism in the Philippines, particularly the relations between persons and pigs, the sensorial transformation of spirits, and interreligious encounters. His current research shifts to marine anthropology, exploring human-lobster relations, the temporalities of fishing, and the infrastructures of care in Maine's lobster industry.
The recent publications reflect a strong thematic focus on marine temporalities, human-animal relations, and the environmental impacts of climate change. Articles explore topics such as the 'timescapes of lively storage,' digital affectivity in trap monitoring, and the spectral ecologies of marine life. The work combines ethnographic depth with theoretical innovation in multispecies and ontological anthropology.
Remme has contributed to academic discourse through extensive publications, including the monograph Pigs and Persons in the Philippines (2014) and the edited volume Human Nature and Social Life (2017). He has also published in journals such as Ethnos and contributed to book chapters and reviews.
He actively supervises Master’s students in social anthropology, with recent theses on transnational families, marriages, underground music scenes, Hong Kong politics, and Norwegian spiritualism. His research is supported by the Research Council of Norway, indicating active grant funding. Remme frequently presents at international workshops and conferences, such as the Environmental Anthropology Workshop in Edinburgh and the Fluid Commons workshop at the University of Oslo.
Remme is affiliated with the Department of Social Anthropology at the University of Bergen, where he conducts fieldwork, publishes, and teaches. His work forms part of a broader network of environmental and multispecies anthropology, engaging with themes of conservation, mobility, and the politics of marine life.
