Jon Garthoff is a Professor & Director of Graduate Studies in the Department of Philosophy at the University of Tennessee. He holds a Ph.D. from UCLA and an undergraduate degree from Princeton. Prior to his current position, he served as an assistant professor at Northwestern University and a visiting assistant professor at the University of Chicago.
His research focuses on ethical theory, political philosophy, and the intersection of psychological capacities (including those of nonhuman animals) with ethics, law, and politics. Key interests include moral responsibility, legal frameworks, and the ethical treatment of nonhuman entities.
