Jon Fraenkel is a Visiting Professor (2024–2027) at Victoria University of Wellington’s School of History, Philosophy, Political Science and International Relations, where he holds the title of Professor of Comparative Politics. Previously, he was a Senior Research Fellow at the Australian National University (2007–2012) and the University of the South Pacific in Fiji (1995–2007). He is concurrently an adjunct Professor at Griffith University, Australia, and serves as the Pacific correspondent for The Economist.
His research focuses on comparative ethnic politics, institutional design in divided societies, and the political economies of Pacific Island states. Key interests include electoral systems, post-colonial governance, and reconciliation processes in conflict-affected regions such as Northern Ireland, Bosnia, and the Western Balkans. He leads two Hong Kong Research Grants Council-funded projects: one on reconciliation dynamics in Germany, Northern Ireland, and the Western Balkans (2023–2026), and another analyzing Northern Ireland’s Good Friday Agreement (2018–2022).
Teaching activities include supervising PhD students on topics like cyber security in Oceania, Pacific free association agreements, and political settlements in East Timor. Courses taught span governance of divided societies, Pacific politics, and statebuilding. His work has been published in leading journals such as the Journal of Pacific History, Australian Journal of Politics and History, and Party Politics.
