His research focuses on the evolution of passerine birds (Passeriformes), leveraging collaborations with institutions like the Swedish Natural History Museum, University of California, Berkeley, and Muséum National d'Histoire Naturelle, Paris. He specializes in biogeography, taxonomy, and speciation processes, integrating molecular phylogenies with distributional data to study global diversification patterns.
- Collaborates with Center for Macroecology (Carsten Rahbek) and researchers Hans Siegismund (Copenhagen) and Rauri Bowie (Berkeley)
- Curator of the Zoological Museum's Aves collections and informal custodian of Amphibia/Reptilia collections
- Active in international committees (Global Biodiversity Information Facility, International Ornithological Committee)
His work spans tropical Andes and eastern Africa, using traditional biogeographical methods alongside DNA studies and GIS technology. Conservation priority analysis and historical population structure studies are integral to his research. He supervises Bachelor’s, Master’s, and Ph.D. projects and contributes to large-scale initiatives like the All Birds Barcode Initiative.
