Jon Crowcroft is the Marconi Professor of Communications Systems at the Computer Laboratory, University of Cambridge, and a Fellow of Wolfson College. He holds honorary professorial roles at University College London (UCL) and the Turing Institute. His academic journey includes a BA in Physics from Trinity College, Cambridge (1979), an MSc (1981), and a PhD (1993) in Computing from UCL.
His research spans networking, cybersecurity, data policy, and trustworthy digital infrastructure, with a focus on decentralized systems and federated learning. He has contributed to foundational work on Internet architecture, including seminal papers on network coding and privacy-enhancing technologies. Crowcroft is a Fellow of the Royal Society, ACM, IEEE, and other leading institutions, and recipient of the 2009 SIGCOMM Award.
He advises on policy matters related to data governance and has led initiatives like the Centre for ReDecentralisation. His work emphasizes ethical design, sustainability, and societal impact, reflected in publications on metaverse frameworks, climate-friendly research, and equitable digital systems.
