Jon Amakawa is a Professor at Fitchburg State University leading the Arts and Game Design in Japan study abroad program (May 2026), teaching GAME 2001: Game and Arts—a 3-credit course satisfying Global Diversity Non-Western (GDAN), IHIP, and AIA requirements. The program explores contemporary Japanese art forms through video games, anime, and manga within traditional design and cultural contexts.
His research examines the evolution of modern Japanese pop culture from historical foundations, particularly Edo period Ukiyo-e woodblock prints and shoin architecture as precursors to contemporary game aesthetics. This includes analyzing Hokusai's Manga as the root of modern manga development and tracing connections between traditional visual arts and digital media.
Amakawa has led prior iterations of this program, with 2023 participants describing it as "one of the best experiences in my life" that provides unparalleled cultural immersion through expert-guided tours of sites like Tokyo's Senso-ji Temple, Kyoto's historic districts, and Nagoya Castle. The program features company visits, university collaborations (e.g., International Professional University of Technology), and traditional experiences including tea ceremonies.
Administered by the Office of International Education, the program prioritizes Game Design majors and offers the Global Ambassador Scholarship. Non-refundable payments are due November 2025-January 2026, with applications reviewed by Amakawa by September 20, 2025. Standard financial aid does not cover program costs.
