Prof. Joke Spikman is a Professor at the University of Groningen, affiliated with both the Faculty of Behavioural and Social Sciences and the Faculty of Medical Sciences. She holds dual roles as a Clinical Neuropsychologist and Head of the Department of Clinical Neuropsychology at the University Medical Center Groningen (UMCG). Additionally, she is a Visiting Professor at Université Paris Nanterre and Université Paris 8. Her research focuses on neuropsychological aspects of neurological disorders, including attention, executive functions, and social cognition impairments. She specializes in diagnosis and neuropsychological rehabilitation for patients with neurological conditions.
Key areas of expertise include cognitive impairments in neurological disorders, such as traumatic brain injury, gliomas, and subarachnoid hemorrhage. She has contributed to studies on diffusion-weighted imaging validation, cognitive assessment tools, and stress biomarkers in mild traumatic brain injury. Prof. Spikman has also explored social cognitive interventions for neurological patients and the impact of radiotherapy on cognitive outcomes.
She has received prestigious awards, including the Member of Honour NIP and Betto Deelman Prize. Her work integrates clinical practice with research, emphasizing translational outcomes. Prof. Spikman collaborates with institutions globally and leads projects addressing cognitive rehabilitation, neuroimaging applications, and neurotrauma recovery. She is part of research groups like Cognition, Ageing and Disease (CAD) and Biology-Related, Artificial, and Interventional Neuroscience (BRAIN) at the UMCG.
