Dr. Johnnetta Betsch Cole is a distinguished anthropologist, scholar, and academic leader. She served as president of Spelman College (1987–1995) and Bennett College (2002–2007), becoming the first African American woman to lead these historically Black institutions. Previously, she held professorships at Washington State University, the University of Massachusetts Amherst, and Hunter College. Her research focuses on African diaspora communities, racial inclusion, and cultural anthropology, with fieldwork in Liberia and Haiti. Additionally, she directed the Smithsonian’s National Museum of African Art (2009–2013). Cole’s contributions to academia and cultural preservation were recognized with the 2021 National Humanities Medal by President Biden.
