Johnathan Flowers

Johnathan Flowers is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Philosophy within the College of Humanities at California State University, Northridge (CSUN). His contact email is johnathan.flowers@csun.edu.

His primary research spans Africana Philosophy, Japanese Philosophy, American Pragmatism, Philosophy of Disability, Philosophy of Technology, Feminist Philosophy, Philosophy of Race, Aesthetics, Philosophy of Gender, and Philosophy of Science. He actively bridges philosophy with Disability Studies, Science and Technology Studies, and Comics Studies, applying theoretical frameworks to human-computer interaction, artificial intelligence, machine learning, and identity representation in digital spaces and popular culture.

Flowers has published the monograph "Mono no Aware and Gender as Affect in Japanese Aesthetics and American Pragmatism" (Lexington Books, 2023), which develops a poetics of experience through Audre Lorde's theory of the Erotic as an affective integrative principle for unifying selfhood. His teaching includes Philosophy of Disability (PHIL 324), Japanese Philosophy (PHIL 332), and Aesthetics (PHIL 380), with courses scheduled in JR204 during Fall 2025.
