John van Buren is a Professor of Philosophy and Director of both the Environmental Studies and Peace and Justice Studies programs at Fordham University. He holds offices in Collins Hall, Room 111. His research focuses on environmental philosophy, 20th-century continental philosophy, and ancient philosophy, with a particular emphasis on environmental historiography and Greek natural philosophy.
His notable works include the 2018 co-authored monograph Greek Natural Philosophy: The Presocratics And Their Importance For Environmental Philosophy, and earlier works on Martin Heidegger such as The Young Heidegger: Rumor of the Hidden King (1994). He has also co-edited volumes on Heidegger's early thought and translated key Heidegger texts. As series editor for SUNY Press’s Environmental Philosophy and Ethics, he has contributed to 20+ volumes since 2002.
Van Buren’s research bridges historical philosophical traditions with contemporary environmental ethics, integrating ancient thought with modern ecological concerns. His current book project explores environmental historiographies across philosophical eras, arguing for their relevance to today’s environmental challenges.
