Dr. John Wilesmith is a Lecturer (Teaching) in Political Theory at the Department of Political Science, University College London (UCL). He also serves as co-director of the UCL Centre for the Pedagogy of Politics. Prior to UCL, he taught at King’s College London. He holds a PhD and MA in Political Theory from UCL.
His research focuses on social justice, egalitarianism, liberalism, and the structure of firms in political economies. He explores the role of property-owning democracy and the implications of firm size on social systems. Emerging interests include the pedagogy of political theory.
His publications, including articles in the Journal of Political Philosophy and Diacritica, highlight his work on corporate governance and property-owning democracy. The 2021 article on firm structures exemplifies his engagement with liberal socialism, while earlier work critiques corporate governance frameworks. Book reviews, such as his analysis of Alan Thomas’s Republic of Equals, underscore his contributions to political philosophy discourse.
Teaching includes leading modules on political philosophy, ethics, and democracy. He has supervised numerous undergraduate and postgraduate dissertations. His pedagogical focus aligns with his research on educational approaches in political theory.
As co-director of the UCL Centre for the Pedagogy of Politics, he contributes to innovative teaching methodologies in political science education.
