John Wesley Wright is an Associate Professor of Music at Salisbury University, coordinating voice and opera workshop programs. He holds a DMA and MM from the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music and a BM from Maryville College. A tenor performer, he specializes in vocal performance studies with a focus on African American song traditions and baroque to Broadway repertoire. His research includes musical borrowings in Leonard Bernstein’s Mass.

His performances include a Lincoln Center debut in Handel’s Messiah (2017) and membership in the American Spiritual Ensemble. He actively leads workshops on voice production and has co-directed the Maryland Summer Center of the Arts’ musical theatre program.
Awards: Gold Medalist in the American Traditions Vocal Competition (2000), plus top honors from National Federation of Music Clubs, Metropolitan Opera National Council, and International Schubert Competition.
He maintains roles in professional music organizations and has engaged in external collaborations related to music education and performance.
