John Wertheimer serves as the William R. Kenan, Jr. Professor of History in the Department of History at Davidson College, specializing in modern U.S. history and legal history instruction.
His research centers on legal history across the United States and Latin America, with significant focus on the U.S. South as evidenced by his two scholarly books examining North Carolina court cases and South Carolina's legal evolution from slavery to Jim Crow. These publications collectively feature contributions from 150 Davidson undergraduate students.
Professor Wertheimer maintains an active collaborative practice with students, co-producing conference presentations, documentary films, and publications. Notable projects include student research for Iwo Jima documentaries and the investigative film 'Beneath the Veneer' exploring historical crimes and justice failures.
