John Wells Foster (1815–1873) was an American geologist and archaeologist. He held a professorship in natural history at the Old University of Chicago. After studying at Wesleyan University (1831–1834), he practiced law briefly before embarking on geological surveys in Ohio and Michigan. His work identified coal reserves and fossilized mastodon remains, including the giant beaver species Castoroides ohioensis. He co-authored influential reports on Michigan’s mineral resources and later focused on archaeology, particularly the Mound Builders culture. Foster served as president of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (1869–1872) and the Chicago Academy of Sciences.

Foster’s research spanned geology and archaeology. His geological work emphasized stratigraphy, mineral resource assessment, and regional survey techniques. In archaeology, he pioneered studies of Indigenous North American societies, culminating in his posthumously published Prehistoric Races. His publications integrated fieldwork with interdisciplinary analysis, reflecting 19th-century scientific rigor.
Foster's awards highlight his leadership: AAAS presidency marked his contributions to scientific collaboration. His 1850–1851 Michigan reports remain foundational for understanding the region’s geology. Later, his archaeological work bridged anthropology and natural history, influencing later studies of pre-Columbian cultures.
Though involved in politics (Know-Nothing movement and Republican Party formation), his legacy lies in scientific contributions. He collaborated with prominent figures like Josiah Whitney and Charles Jackson, demonstrating interdisciplinary collaboration typical of his era.
