Dr. Wellons’ research focuses on improving outcomes in pediatric neurosurgery through clinical innovation and multi-center collaboration. His primary interests include hydrocephalus, Chiari malformations, brachial plexus injuries, pediatric brain tumors, and fetal surgery for spina bifida. He is a pioneer in endoscopic minimally invasive procedures, particularly endoscopic third ventriculostomy (ETV) as an alternative to shunts. His work emphasizes data-driven decision-making, predictive modeling, and patient-centered care.
The 15 most recent publications reflect a strong emphasis on hydrocephalus management, surgical outcomes, predictive modeling, and innovation in pediatric neurosurgery. Key themes include shunt alternatives, multi-center clinical trials (especially through the Hydrocephalus Clinical Research Network), brachial plexus repair, and program development. His research consistently aims to standardize care, improve outcomes, and expand access to advanced neurosurgical techniques for children.
- President of the American Society of Pediatric Neurosurgeons (ASPN), 2024–2025
Dr. Wellons has been the Principal Investigator for multiple NIH and privately funded studies, including the Hydrocephalus Clinical Research Network (HCRN), which he co-founded, and the SOPHH study on shunting outcomes in premature infants. He has mentored numerous researchers and clinicians, notably through his long-term collaboration with Chevis Shannon, and has served on the editorial board of the Journal of Neurosurgery: Pediatrics since 2012, including as co-chair. His leadership has transformed pediatric neurosurgery at Vanderbilt into a nationally recognized, research-intensive program.
Dr. Wellons leads the Surgical Outcomes Center for Kids and has been instrumental in expanding Vanderbilt’s role in fetal surgery and pediatric neurosurgical research. He founded or co-founded multiple research initiatives, including the Vanderbilt Pediatric Neurosurgery Clinical Research Initiative, and has fostered collaborations across disciplines to improve care for children with complex neurological conditions.
