Dr. John Weber is a Professor in the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences at the School of Pharmacy, Memorial University of Newfoundland. He completed his B.S. in Biology/Psychology from Eastern Michigan University, M.S. in Pharmaceutical Sciences from the University of Montana, and Ph.D. in Pharmacology and Toxicology from the Medical College of Virginia. He conducted postdoctoral research at Erasmus University Rotterdam and served as an Assistant Professor at Erasmus Medical Center before joining the School of Pharmacy in November 2006.
Research Interests: Dr. Weber's research focuses on the mechanisms underlying cerebellar pathology, neurodegenerative diseases, and brain aging. His work explores neuroprotective compounds, particularly polyphenols from berries and marine products, and investigates the long-term neurological effects of adolescent ethanol exposure using mutant mouse models. His studies integrate molecular neuroscience, neuropharmacology, and behavioral analysis.
Publication Trends: His recent publications highlight a strong emphasis on dietary interventions for neuroprotection, neuroinflammatory pathways in microglia, and cerebellar dysfunction in disease and addiction models. The work bridges pharmacology, neuroscience, and nutritional biochemistry, with frequent use of animal and cellular models to assess therapeutic potential of natural compounds.
Teaching Areas: He teaches in neuropharmacology, drug abuse and addiction, cellular and molecular neuroscience, and nervous system diseases.
Advising and Grants: Dr. Weber has advised graduate students and led research projects supported by institutional and external funding, though specific grants are not listed. As of August 2022, he is not accepting new graduate students.
Laboratory Research: His lab employs transgenic mouse models, biochemical assays, and behavioral testing to study cerebellar ataxia, neuroinflammation, and neuroprotection. Current projects include examining the effects of berries and marine products on neurodegeneration and the cellular basis of motor dysfunction in carbonic anhydrase-deficient mice.
