John W. White serves as Associate Professor of Composition and Music Studies at Ithaca College's School of Music, Theatre, and Dance, specializing in Music Theory. He directs the Ithaca College Jazz Vocal Ensemble (IC-JVE) and maintains an active career as a professional pianist across jazz, classical, and popular genres.
His educational credentials include a Ph.D. in Music Theory from Indiana University (minor fields: Music History/Literature and Ethnomusicology), an M.M. in Music Theory from Ithaca College, and dual B.M. degrees in Theory/Composition and Piano Performance from the University of Northern Colorado.
Dr. White's research centers on rhythm pedagogy (co-developer of the Takadimi system), structural analysis of free improvisation, and semiotic interpretation of vernacular musics. He has presented extensively on Oregon's chamber ensemble, improvisation pedagogy, and cultural analysis of musical styles at national conferences.
His scientific recognition includes the Lieber Award for Distinguished Teaching (1990) and Dale Dykins Award in Composition (1980).
As an educator, he teaches graduate/undergraduate theory sequences, 20th-century analysis, aural skills, and specialized courses including Choral Arranging and Music in Society. His 16-year tenure as Music Director for St. Paul's United Methodist Church concluded recently, while his leadership of the historically significant IC-JVE continues the ensemble's legacy of producing Grammy-winning artists.
