John Traxler is Professor of Digital Learning, UNESCO Chair in Innovative Informal Digital Learning in Disadvantaged and Development Contexts, and Commonwealth of Learning Chair for innovations in higher education. He serves as Academic Director of the Avallain Lab, focusing on ethical and pedagogical dimensions of educational AI. His work has been cited over 12,000 times, and Stanford University ranks him among the top 2% of scholars in his discipline.
Research interests include the societal and pedagogical impacts of mobile learning, the role of AI in addressing global disadvantage, and the decolonization of digital learning technologies. His career spans pioneering work in mobile learning (2000s), exploring the cultural consequences of connectivity (2010s), and current research on AI ethics and educational equity.
Traxler has authored over 40 papers and seven books, and consulted for international organizations such as UNESCO, ITU, ILO, USAID, DFID, EU, UNRWA, British Council, and UNICEF. He holds prestigious fellowships including FRSA, MBCS, AFIMA, and MIET.
