Professor John Traill holds dual roles as Director of Music and Supernumerary Fellow at St Anne's College, Oxford, alongside a Professorship at the Royal Military School of Music. His affiliations include the University of Oxford's Faculty of Music, where he leads courses in instrumental conducting and orchestration. He has held teaching roles at Royal Holloway, Kings College London, and Bangor University, among others.
His research focuses on orchestration history, conducting practices post-1750, and contemporary music performance. Notable achievements include winning major conducting competitions (Leeds 2005, Vakhtani 2006) and the Paritor Award for collaborative outreach programs. His compositions blend contemporary concert works with educational pieces, such as Lightbobs (performed by 600+ at Symphony Hall Birmingham) and Oxonia (Royal Albert Hall).
Prof Traill conducts ensembles including St Anne’s Camerata, Ensemble ISIS, and the Oxfordshire County Youth Orchestra. His outreach work bridges academia and community through initiatives like the Advanced Musicianship Programme. Recordings include Autumnal (Guild Records) and Scherzo Capriccioso (BBC Radio 3).
