John Tomes is an Instrument Scientist in the Department of Physics at Aberystwyth University, joining in September 2023 as part of the Enfys project. He previously served as Research Development Officer-Sciences at RB&I, supporting grant applications, and worked at The Centre for Photonics Expertise (CPE) within the AU Physics Department. Holding a PhD in Bio Physics and with prior experience as a power tools design engineer, Tomes specializes in interdisciplinary research with industrial collaboration.
His research focuses on structural color, photonic crystals, polymer materials, and thin films, with contributions to sustainable development goals. Key projects include developing the Enfys infra-red spectrometer and exploring optical imaging enhancements for parasitic diagnostics.
Main scientific contributions span materials science, biophotonics, and parasitology, with over 12 peer-reviewed publications since 2016. His work emphasizes practical applications of advanced optical techniques in both material engineering and biological systems.
Collaborations include international teams in photonics, parasitology, and cell biology. He actively engages in lab-based research and contributes to the Enfys project’s technical validation and calibration efforts.
