John Thomas

John Thomas serves as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technology within the College of Engineering Technology at Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT). He joined RIT in August 2025, bringing expertise at the intersection of electrical engineering, computer technology, and neuroscience.

Education:

• B. Tech. from NIT Calicut, India (2010-2014)
• PhD from Nanyang Technological University, Singapore (2015-2020)
• Postdoctoral training at Montreal Neurological Institute, Canada (2021-2023)
• Postdoctoral training at Duke University, USA (2023-2025)

Dr. Thomas specializes in applying cutting-edge artificial intelligence to understand the human brain through sleep-wake electrophysiology, neuroimaging, and neuromodulation techniques. His research spans neural signal processing, brain-computer interfaces, and neurotechnology development, with particular focus on AI applications for neurological disorders. He's currently building a research team to explore innovative solutions at the intersection of artificial intelligence, signal processing, control systems, neurophysiology, and neuroscience.

Dr. Thomas offers hands-on mentorship for both academic and industry-oriented projects, providing access to international collaborators and datasets. He teaches courses including CPET-133 Introduction to Digital and Microcontroller Systems, covering digital systems, Boolean algebra, combinational and sequential logic, and microcontroller programming.

His research environment emphasizes collaboration, with opportunities for publication, prototyping, and potential commercialization. While building his research program at RIT, he maintains connections with international collaborators that may provide internship opportunities for students.
