Dr. John Swallow is Professor of Biology in the Department of Integrative Biology at University of Colorado Denver, College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. His research program in evolutionary physiology examines integrated phenotypic evolution, particularly the relationships between morphology, physiology, and behavior using stalk-eyed flies as model organisms. Current projects investigate compensation mechanisms for sexually selected ornaments, neurochemical regulation of aggression, and pavement ant collective behavior.
Research focuses on evolutionary conflicts between sexual selection and performance traits, with ongoing NSF-funded projects examining compensation in ornament development and neuroendocrine regulation of aggression. Lab employs physiological, behavioral, and agent-based modeling approaches.
Recent publications explore neurochemical modulation of aggression across species, evolutionary morphology of sexual ornaments, and collective decision-making in social insects. Articles frequently integrate behavioral assays with neuropharmacological manipulations.
