Dr. John Steele is a Senior Lecturer in the School of Mathematics and Statistics at the University of New South Wales (UNSW), where he has been employed since 1992. He received his BSc, MSc, and PhD in General Relativity from the University of Aberdeen, graduating in 1986, 1988, and 1989 respectively. His research focuses on exact solutions of Einstein's equations, spacetime symmetries, and the history of relativity theory, with a particular emphasis on extending formalisms for vacuum space-times admitting isometries to homothetic and conformal vectors.
- University of Aberdeen: BSc (1986), MSc (1988), PhD (1989)
- Monash University: Research Associate (funded by Australian Research Council)
- UNSW: Associate Lecturer (1992), Lecturer (2001), Senior Lecturer (2018)
His research interests include Relativity (Special & General), Differential Geometry, Computer Algebra, and the History of Mathematical Physics. His articles reflect advancements in homothetic and conformal symmetries, Newman-Tamburino metrics, and coordinate systems in gravitational theory. These works span fields like Expanding Knowledge in the Mathematical Sciences and Expanding Knowledge in the Physical Sciences.
At UNSW, he served as Director of Undergraduate Studies from 2007 to 2021 and is a member of the Academic Board, elected in 2017 with re-elections in 2021 and 2023. His expertise is recognized through his ORCID 0000-0003-1755-4635.
