John Spiesberger is a Visiting Professor in the Department of Earth and Environmental Science at the University of Pennsylvania since 1999. Previously, he worked at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (1982–1992) and the Department of Meteorology and Applied Research Laboratory at Pennsylvania State University (1992–1999). His research focuses on acoustic methods for locating and census of marine mammals, sound propagation models, and signal processing. He holds a Ph.D. in Oceanography from Scripps Institution of Oceanography (1980) and an A.B. in Physics from UC Berkeley (1975). A notable project involves using time differences of arrival in 2D models for marine mammal localization in the Chukchi Sea.
Research Interests:
- Quantitative methods for estimating animal abundance in aquatic and aerial environments
- Acoustic array techniques for precise source localization
- Propagation characteristics of sound in complex oceanic and atmospheric environments
- Development of signal processing algorithms for ecological monitoring
No scientific awards or funded grants were explicitly mentioned in the provided text. His academic journey includes affiliations with leading institutions in oceanography and applied physics.
