John Shoptaw is a Senior Continuing Lecturer in the Department of English at the University of California, Berkeley. Specializing in 19th- to 21st-century American literature, creative writing, and poetry, his research focuses on ecopoetics, climate poetry, and intersections between literature and environmental studies. He is currently writing a book of essays titled Impurities, exploring themes like ecopoetics, climate action, and future imaginaries.
Shoptaw has published widely in literary journals including American Poetry Review, Poetry Magazine, and Arion, with notable works such as Near-Earth Object (2024) and Times Beach (2015). His recent work bridges classical traditions (e.g., Ovid adaptations) with contemporary ecological crises, emphasizing interdisciplinary approaches to environmental humanities.
He has taught courses on ecopoetry, Emily Dickinson, and creative writing at Berkeley, with upcoming Spring 2025 courses on ecopoetics and Dickinson research. His writings frequently appear in transnational contexts, reflecting a commitment to global environmental discourses.
