John-Sebastian Schutter is an Assistant Professor in the School of Social Sciences at Heriot-Watt University, specializing in Languages & Intercultural Studies. He holds a PhD in Developmental Linguistics from the University of Edinburgh and has taught there as a Fellow (2013–2021). He also served as a Visiting Professor at the University of Essex (2009).

His research focuses on Psycholinguistics, Bilingualism, and Second Language Acquisition, with additional expertise in Language Testing and Statistics. He coordinates courses for HW Global College and has over 20 years of teaching experience in the Netherlands and UK.
His publications explore topics like morphological processing in second languages and collaborative learning strategies in pre-sessional EAP courses. He currently teaches at Heriot-Watt University, where he has been since 2013.
