Prof. Dr. John W.A. Rossen holds an endowed professorship in Personalized Molecular Microbiology at the University of Groningen, with joint appointments at Isala Hospital and the University of Utah. With over 235 peer-reviewed publications, he pioneers next-generation sequencing applications in clinical microbiology and infection prevention. His work spans pathogen genomics, antimicrobial resistance surveillance, and diagnostic innovation.
Research encompasses:
- Metagenomic pathogen detection and resistance gene tracking
- Plasmid-mediated transmission mechanisms in healthcare settings
- One Health approaches to antimicrobial resistance
- Standardization of genomic diagnostics
Recent publications focus on clinical metagenomics workflows, environmental reservoirs of resistance genes, and veterinary-human transmission interfaces. He developed benchmark testing protocols ensuring diagnostic quality across diverse laboratories during the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic.
As Medical Head of Innovation and Science at Isala Hospital and Education Officer for ESCMID's Genomic Diagnostics Study Group, he bridges research and clinical practice. He mentors PhD students and leads European consortia on diagnostic innovation.
