John R. Cooley is an Associate Professor in Residence in the Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology at the University of Connecticut, Hartford. His research focuses on understanding how ecological communities respond to urbanization and how urban development patterns can be adjusted to reduce ecological impacts. He has collaborated on projects investigating host-parasite relationships in birds influenced by urban heat effects. Cooley holds an MBA from UConn’s School of Business alongside his academic credentials in Biology. His work spans cicada phylogeny, periodical cicada life cycles, and the effects of pathogens like Massospora cicadina on insect behavior.
Education includes a B.Sc. from Yale University, M.Sc. and Ph.D. from the University of Michigan, and an MBA from UConn. He has been a Visiting Assistant Professor at Wesleyan University and Ohio State University, and a Lecturer at Yale. Cooley’s research integrates molecular biology, biogeography, and citizen science to study cicada populations and their environmental interactions. His lab engages in long-term projects mapping cicada broods and analyzing their genetic and behavioral adaptations.
