John Quarles is a Professor in the Department of Computer Science at the University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA), part of the College of Sciences. His research focuses on virtual and augmented realities, human-computer interaction, and artificial intelligence applications. He holds a Ph.D. and M.S. in Computer Engineering from the University of Florida and a B.A. in Computer Science from the University of Texas at Austin. Quarles leads the San Antonio Virtual Environments (SAVE) Lab, which develops innovative solutions for accessibility, healthcare, and education through immersive technologies. He emphasizes accessible VR/AR systems for individuals with disabilities and has contributed to projects like GingerVR, an open-source platform for cybersickness reduction. His teaching includes courses on user interfaces and computer graphics. Beyond academia, he is a musician with diverse styles and collaborates on film scores.
