Dr. John Porter is a Visiting Senior Lecturer at the University of New South Wales (UNSW), affiliated with the School of Biological, Earth and Environmental Sciences and the Centre for Ecosystem Science. He also serves as a Senior Scientist at the Office of Environment & Heritage and a Research Fellow at the Centre for Ecosystem Science. With 25 years of expertise, he focuses on plant community ecology in temporary and permanent wetlands, alongside landscape-scale biodiversity monitoring, particularly waterbirds in Australian rivers and wetlands.
His research interests include wetland ecology, plant community dynamics, and the impacts of environmental changes on ecosystems. Key areas involve waterbird conservation, climate change adaptation, and sustainable water management in arid regions. Porter has authored influential studies on waterbird population dynamics, wetland prioritization, and the effects of human interventions on aquatic ecosystems.
Publications emphasize interdisciplinary approaches to ecological monitoring and conservation, with recent work addressing climate-driven shifts in restoration targets for waterbirds. His work bridges academic research and applied conservation, contributing to policy-relevant data through annual waterbird surveys and collaborative projects.
Porter’s contributions include over 30 peer-reviewed articles and technical reports, focusing on Australia’s iconic river systems like the Murray-Darling Basin. He has presented at international conferences on topics such as seed bank dynamics, charophyte communities, and aerial survey methodologies, showcasing his commitment to advancing ecological science.
His research teams and collaborations have produced actionable insights for managing biodiversity under climate uncertainty, making him a pivotal figure in Australian environmental science.
