John Peters is the Maria Rosa Menocal Professor of English and Film & Media Studies at Yale University. Previously, he taught at the University of Iowa from 1986 to 2016. His research focuses on media theory, media history (spanning early modern, 19th-century, postwar, and contemporary periods), environmental humanities (particularly weather and oceans), and critical digital studies. He has written extensively on interdisciplinary topics involving art, literature, music, and religion.
His notable works include Promiscuous Knowledge (2020), The Marvelous Clouds (2015), Courting the Abyss (2005), and Speaking into the Air (1999). Currently, he is researching a media history of weather. Peters has advised over 35 doctoral dissertations, demonstrating his commitment to mentorship in academia.
