John Peponis is a Professor of Architecture at the Georgia Institute of Technology, affiliated with the College of Design. He holds a Ph.D., M.Sc., and B.Sc. in Architecture from University College, University of London. His research focuses on spatial analysis, space syntax, urban design, spatial cognition, and museum architecture. As a registered architect in Greece, he collaborates with Kokkinou and Kourkoulas Architects as a consultant since 1992.
Peponis is an international leader in spatial analysis and a co-founder of space syntax theory. His work explores geometric and computational foundations of spatial configurations, spatial culture in built environments, design logic, and the relationship between architecture and human behavior. Notable contributions include studies on museums as spatial configurations, urban morphology, and the pedagogical functions of urban spaces.
His recent publications (2023–2025) emphasize advanced space syntax applications, museum design, and algorithmic urban analysis. His earlier works (2015–2019) address spatial syntax in factories, urban connectivity, and cognitive mechanisms in spatial exploration. While no specific awards are listed, his extensive publications and consulting roles highlight his academic and professional impact.
No specific grants or advising details are provided, but his collaborations with architectural firms and interdisciplinary research in spatial cognition suggest active engagement in applied design research. His work integrates architectural theory with computational methods, contributing to both academic discourse and practical design solutions.
