Dr. John P. Perdew is Professor of Physics at Tulane University's School of Science & Engineering. He holds an AB from Gettysburg College (1965) and PhD from Cornell University (1971). His research specializes in solid state theory and density functional theory (DFT).
Research develops and refines density functional methodologies for electronic structure calculations, with applications in materials science, chemistry, and nanoscience. Current work focuses on improving accuracy for covalent, metallic, and weak bonds through semilocal functional development.
Publications demonstrate fundamental advances in DFT approximations, including van der Waals interactions, structural phase transitions, and nanomaterial properties. Research regularly appears in high-impact physics and chemistry journals.
