Dr. John P. Holdren is a Research Professor at Harvard University’s Kennedy School of Government and Co-Director of the Science, Technology, and Public Policy Program at the Belfer Center. He previously held roles as the Teresa and John Heinz Professor of Environmental Policy and Professor of Environmental Science and Policy in the Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences. He served as President Obama’s Science Advisor (2009–2017) and Director of the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy, advising on science and technology issues impacting national security, energy, climate change, and international relations. His academic career spans MIT, Stanford, and UC Berkeley, where he co-founded the Energy and Resources Group.
Holdren earned degrees in aeronautics/astronautics from MIT and a Ph.D. in aero/astro and theoretical plasma physics from Stanford. He has held leadership roles in organizations like the National Academy of Sciences and the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and received prestigious awards including the MacArthur Fellowship and Tyler Prize for Environment. His research focuses on climate policy, nuclear nonproliferation, and Arctic governance.
He is affiliated with the Woodwell Climate Research Center as President Emeritus and advises on science policy globally. Key initiatives include the Arctic Initiative, Managing the Atom Project, and Science, Technology, and Public Policy Program. His work bridges academia, government, and international organizations to address complex global challenges.
