Professor Ledyard's research focuses on the theoretical foundations and applications of mechanism design, particularly examining the roles of incentives and information in organizations. His work spans theoretical contributions to incentive-compatible organization and voting system design, as well as applied work in computer-assisted markets for pollution rights trading, logistics contracts, securities portfolios, prediction markets, and advertising time. His current research includes market-based approaches for managing spacecraft design and cap-and-trade systems for sustainable fisheries management. His publications reveal a consistent focus on information aggregation, market efficiency, evolutionary learning models, and neural measures of economic value, demonstrating how economic theory can be applied to solve complex organizational and societal problems.
His scientific honors include being elected as a Fellow of the Econometric Society (1977), Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences (1999), Fellow of the Public Choice Society (2004), and Fellow of the Society for the Advancement of Economic Theory (2011), along with honorary PhD degrees from Purdue and Indiana Universities.
