John N. Tsitsiklis is the Clarence J. Lebel Professor in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science (EECS) at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), affiliated with the Laboratory for Information and Decision Systems (LIDS), Institute for Data, Systems, and Society (IDSS), Statistics and Data Science Center (SDSC), and Operations Research Center (ORC). He specializes in stochastic systems, optimization, control theory, and distributed computation.
His research interests span probabilistic modeling, inference, control, and optimization, with applications in machine learning, operations research, and decision systems. He co-authored foundational texts including Introduction to Probability, Introduction to Linear Optimization, and Neuro-dynamic Programming, which have shaped educational and technical discourse in these fields.
His teaching focuses on stochastic systems and optimization, including an EdX MOOC (6.431x) on probability and the course 6.041/6.431 at MIT. He is recognized for his contributions to distributed computation and numerical methods, as seen in his co-authored book Parallel and Distributed Computation: Numerical Methods.
He is affiliated with multiple MIT-based research centers and labs, including
- Laboratory for Information and Decision Systems (LIDS)
- Institute for Data, Systems, and Society (IDSS)
- Statistics and Data Science Center (SDSC)
- Operations Research Center (ORC)
