John Muse is an Assistant Professor of Visual Studies at Haverford College, where he also serves as Director of Visual Studies and Director of VCAM. His academic work bridges visual studies, rhetoric, and continental philosophy, with a focus on semiotics, phenomenology, and psychoanalysis.

Muse's research examines photography, film, and contemporary art through the lens of rhetorical theory and continental philosophy. He investigates how visual media engages with crises of evidence and representation, drawing on semiotics and psychoanalytic frameworks.
His artistic practice, including single-channel videotapes and multimedia installations, has been exhibited across the United States and Europe. Collaborating with Jeanne C. Finley, he has received significant recognition for experimental documentary projects.
