Dr. John Moores is an Associate Professor at York University's Lassonde School of Engineering and Director of the Earth and Space Science & Engineering (ESSE) Graduate Program. He serves as Science Advisor to the Canadian Space Agency (CSA) President and directs the NSERC CREATE Program for Exo/Planetary Science training. Previously, he was Associate Dean of Research & Graduate Studies at Lassonde. With a PhD from the University of Arizona (2008), Moores is a Royal Society of Canada Fellow and holds the York Research Chair in Space Exploration (2019).
His research focuses on planetary volatiles, atmospheric processes, and space mission instrumentation. Major projects include work on Mars' methane cycles, water-ice clouds, and lunar ice exploration. He leads the Planetary Volatiles Laboratory (PVL), developing instruments like FROST, MAPLE, and MAGE for planetary missions. Moores has published over 95 peer-reviewed articles (8k+ citations) and contributed to NASA/ESA missions like Phoenix, Curiosity, and Juno.
Key awards include the 2022 McCurdy Award and PERLA, plus 16 NASA Group Achievement Awards for mission contributions. His work bridges engineering and science, emphasizing analog field studies (e.g., Arctic methane seep analyses) and planetary protection protocols. Public engagement activities include a podcast (Popcorn Science) and over 150 media interactions. Current focus areas include Mars methane dynamics, lunar ice preservation, and instrument development for future missions.
