John McTighe serves as an Associate Professor of Social Work at Ramapo College of New Jersey within the School of Social Science and Human Services. He joined the institution in 2015 and maintains an active research and teaching profile in clinical social work with a specialization in trauma therapy and narrative approaches.
Dr. McTighe earned his academic credentials from prestigious institutions: a Ph.D. and M.S.W. from New York University, an M.Div. from Washington Theological Union, and a B.A. from Concordia University in Montreal, Quebec. His multidisciplinary background bridges social work, theology, and clinical psychology.
His research focuses on narrative, object relations, and attachment theories, with particular emphasis on spirituality as a resource in clinical social work practice. He investigates shared traumatic stress phenomena, especially in the context of disasters like 9/11 and Hurricane Katrina, and specializes in the treatment of childhood psychological trauma survivors. His work also explores clinical supervision dynamics and multicultural/bilingual social work practice.
Analysis of McTighe's publication record reveals a consistent focus on narrative approaches to trauma processing and meaning-making. His work often examines how clinicians themselves process collective traumas while treating patients, documenting the phenomenon of shared traumatic stress across multiple disaster contexts. His scholarship bridges theoretical frameworks with practical clinical applications, particularly in how narrative techniques facilitate healing.
Professionally, McTighe serves on the Editorial Board of the Clinical Social Work Journal and works as a consulting reviewer for several prominent publications in the field. His conference presentations demonstrate active engagement with the scholarly community, particularly around integrating spirituality into clinical practice and teaching assessment across multiple theoretical perspectives.
As an educator, McTighe teaches across both the B.S.W. and M.S.W. programs, with courses spanning Theory and Practice of Social Work, Human Behavior in Social Environments across multiple domains, and specialized trauma practice. He is fluent in French and Spanish, enhancing his capacity for multicultural and bilingual social work practice and instruction.
